enzyme's Biologics Support Center in Framingham, Mass., has achieved LEED-Gold certification. It is the company's 10th facility to achieve some type of LEED status.

Dartmouth College's new Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center (named as a result of a large donation from the class) has achieved LEED-Platinum status. Among its environmental features is an air sampling system that monitors the air continually, allowing minute adjustments in airflow that result in energy cost savings. Master Electrician David Levesque (pictured), science facilities building operator, examines some of the many working parts of the mechanics room. The green pipes carry the water that cools the compressors for controlled temperature growth rooms, orange pipes carry glycol hot water for radiant heat, and white pipes carry low pressure steam for humidification of building air.

Member companiesof the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America invested nearly $50 billion in R&D during 2011. This represents nearly 20 percent of all domestic R&D funded by U.S. businesses.


Panasonic has announced the formation of Panasonic Healthcare Company of North America. The newly formed company will consolidate the business operations of the former Panasonic Healthcare Group and the former Sanyo Biomedical Solutions Division.

DuPont has opened a plant genetics research center in Johnston, Iowa. The company says the $40-million facility will eventually create 400 jobs.

Pittsburgh-based generic pharmaceutical manufacturer Mylan plans to invest $100 million in Ireland facilities and create 500 jobs over the next four years. The company is the third largest generic and specialty pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world.

The University of North Florida recently dedicated its new advanced biological sciences building.
