Thirty years ago this spring, Toyota broke ground for its first wholly-owned US plant in Georgetown, Kentucky. Ten years ago, right-to-work legislation appeared to be a foregone conclusion, but the state still hasn't made the move from what some call "forced unionism." Today the plant employs 8,000 and represents a cumulative $6-billion investment that's still growing: A new production engineering campus to be completed in 2017 will bring about 300 more engineering positions to Georgetown.
