SK Innovation and Fraunhofer Institute launch energy storage system research partnership in Germany

Saxony-Anhalt One of the largest battery systems in Germany has been officially opened in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. The opening marks the start of a cooperation agreement between the South Korean company SK Innovation and the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF), in Magdeburg. The partners will collaborate on research pertaining to large energy storage systems.

Large batteries are growing in importance as sources of a secure energy supply. They will store energy from renewable sources and contribute to the stability of grids, and they can guarantee customers a secure energy supply. Hartmut Möllring, Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Science and Economic Affairs, welcomed the intensified research on smart grids in Saxony-Anhalt. "It is very gratifying for our region that a company like SK Innovation is now active in Saxony-Anhalt, which is the German state with the most foreign direct investment in the renewable energy sector. We are assuming a leading position nationally in the development of smart energy with renewable energies. The state government will be supporting that with specific funding in the future, too."

Investors in Saxony-Anhalt benefit not only from its outstanding research landscape and culture of innovation, but also from its central location in the heart of Europe, its state-of-the-art infrastructure and the availability of a highly skilled and motivated workforce.
