Automotive, Internet Business Keep
the South Atlantic Economy in High Gear

by KAREN E. THUERMER

Industries old and new are
thriving in the South Atlantic
region, thanks to recently
enacted pro-business measures
and available workers. South
Carolina is particularly hot this year.

Drive the highways and back roads of the South Atlantic region of the United States and the area's heritage as a center of agriculture, fishing and textile operations quickly come into focus. But just as pervasive is evidence that new industries are now entrenched in the region, and the states are ramping up efforts to attract still more. States from South Carolina to Maryland already are home to companies in the high-tech arena as well as to such industries as automotive, biotechnology and a wide assortment of manufacturing concerns.

Following is a state-by-state review of expansion activity in the South Atlantic region and a look at what the states are doing to stay competitive.
