Tennessee: Looking for
a Few More "Volunteers"

by RICHARD WESTLUND

The high-tech and

healthcare industries are

driving a new round of

business growth in

The Volunteer State's

economy. Every region of

the state is benefiting.

Since the late 1700s, Tennessee has attracted men and women with the frontier spirit. Hardy bands of pioneers crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains to establish communities in a rich land of rivers, lakes, hills and forests. Today, the "Volunteer State" is attracting a new wave of technology pioneers, along with service, distribution and manufacturing companies who are taking advantage of Tennessee's abundant 21st century resources.

For e-commerce companies, distribution firms and traditional manufacturers, Tennessee's central location provides cost-saving logistical advantages. Health care companies, call centers and other service firms benefit from the state's low cost of doing business. Meanwhile, Tennessee's 5.5 million residents are enjoying the state's scenic beauty, mild climate, and renowned quality of life.

"Tennessee is a beautiful state, and the outdoor recreational activities are unparalleled," says Bill Baxter, commissioner of the Tennessee Dept. of Economic and Community Development (ECD). "We hear rave reviews from people who move here from other states -- the quality of life is outstanding."

Stretching 440 miles from the lowlands of the Mississippi River along the valley of the Tennessee River to the Appalachian Mountains in the east, Tennessee also offers a wide selection of economic opportunities in a supportive, pro-business setting. "We are committed to partnering with private industry to ensure economic growth and job creation for our communities and to make sure Tennessee continues to be an attractive location for both existing industry expansion and new business location," says Gov. Don Sundquist.
