California Upgrades Ports

The Port of Long Beach awarded a $71.4 million final contract for the first phase of the Terminal Island Pier T container terminal. The construction will include an on-dock intermodal rail yard, and re-grading for a 115-acre (46-hectare) second phase.

The Port of Long Beach is undergoing massive remodeling
at the former Long Beach Naval Station and Shipyard.

Not far from Long Beach in Torrance, Toyota Motor broke ground in early September 2001 on an $87 million, 625,000-sq.-ft. (58,000-sq.-m.) expansion of its sales headquarters. The company has plans for five three-story buildings, which will house Toyota's Customer Service and Financial Services division. When the project is completed, Toyota's campus will consist of 20 buildings and encompass 70 acres (28 hectares).
Officials with the Port of Sacramento are looking to develop a 280-acre (113-hectare) Seaway International Trade Center. The project would cost $14 million and will create an industrial park as well as dock facilities. The state Technology Trade and Commerce Agency will grant a $10 million loan, which will be used to build infrastructure for about half of the planned business park.
The Port of Oakland is expected to embark on a $1.2 billion commercial renovation. When complete, the project will contain restaurants, lofts, commercial development and a 250-room hotel. If successful, the project will turn Oakland's waterfront into a landmark destination much in the same manner as San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.
