New England States Launch
New Business-Expansion Strategies

by GINNY DEAL

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals' new research and development facility in New London, Conn., is expected to draw other life science companies to the region, boosting Connecticut's bioscience cluster in the southeastern part of the state.

U
nless actual new projects are announced, workers are hired and investment in new facilities takes place, the notion of industry clustering remains just a notion. Connecticut is now seeing the fruits of its efforts to foster clusters, particularly in the biosciences industry, and other states in the New England region are taking notice.
A case in point is Pfizer Pharmaceuticals' new, 750,000-sq.-ft. (69,675-sq.-m.) research and development facility in New London, Conn. Pfizer says the site is the largest privately funded biomedical research project in the world. Connecticut officials point to the state's bioscience cluster as a lucrative lure for such investments.
Other New England states have targeted specific industries, such as captive insurance companies, with tax programs and fewer regulations.
