 PROJECT WATCH

Ireland

Workday, a creator of enterprise cloud applications for finance and HR, announced early this month its intention to create 1,000 new jobs over the next two years in Dublin, where it will also construct its new European headquarters at Grangegorman, Dublin 7. The company opened its Ireland office in 2008 and today employs more than 1,700 people in Dublin. “Workday's new European headquarters situated at Grangegorman will be a highly sustainable 550,000-sq.-ft. campus across approximately four acres in a Strategic Development Zone, adjacent to Technological University Dublin,” the company said. “The company has agreed to purchase the site from the Health Service Executive (HSE).” The project has the support of IDA Ireland and Grangegorman Development Agency.

Prior to the expected arrival of Hurricane Dorian in Florida in 2019 (it instead turned and inflicted its worst damage to the Bahamas), Duke Energy put nearly 6,500 transmission and distribution personnel in place to support power restoration, including these crews near The Villages in Sumter County. Since a Senate resolution in 2013 in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, today’s date, April 18, has been celebrated as National Lineman Appreciation Day, recognizing the men and women who perform the risky and necessary work to keep utility power lines humming. The Colorado State University Tropical Weather and Climate Research team this month predicted 19 named storms (beginning with Alex, Bonnie and Colin) during this year’s hurricane season. In October, more than 300 teams and 200 apprentices (presuming they aren’t needed for real disasters) will attend the International Lineman’s Rodeo competition in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas.
