D'Addario & Co., a family-run business in Farmingdale for the past 30 years that traces its roots to the late 1600s in Italy, is one of the world's best-known manufacturers of instrument strings, drum heads and reeds. In return for a series of project milestones, a $1-million capital grant from Empire State Development is assisting the company in a $9-million plant reconfiguration that features the leasing of a new facility in Melville. The agreement preserves 700 jobs. "We are very excited about our continuation and expansion of our business here on Long Island," said James D'Addario, chairman and CEO.
