Teamwork

At the July 2010 IAMC Board Meeting in Atlanta all board members participated in a group team building session that included the determination of each of our personality types. This was intended to help us better understand how we could more effectively interact with one another knowing that we all react to the same stimulus in different ways. I believe this exercise helped me not only with the board, but professionally and personally, as I now know how to take my energy for solving problems in a direction that will satisfy all of the parties involved.

I recently needed to attend a meeting in eastern Pennsylvania and since it is only a few hours away from my office and my family was enjoying the last of summer vacation, I decided to take them along.

The day we left was beautiful. But when we were about one and a half hours into the drive the front end of the car began to vibrate wildly and steering was difficult at best. After pulling off to the side of the road and I inspecting the car I found nothing wrong. I was somewhat confused and a little apprehensive about continuing to drive. However we decided to continue on our journey. Back on the road my wife then informed me that the same phenomenon had occurred on several other occasions, but since she was able to control the car she did not think much of it. I wanted to solve the problem immediately. My wife wanted to call anyone and everyone she knew to get an opinion on what might be wrong with the car so we could bestow this knowledge on the mechanic.

After much discussion and continued driving disruptions our plan of action was determined. Two service station stops and hundreds of dollars later the problem was resolved and we had smooth sailing over the rest of our trip.

As we were driving back it occurred to me that the situation was handled effectively even though the condition of the car was somewhat serious, not to mention potentially dangerous. We normally react very differently to these types of circumstances, but due to the fact that we understand that we both were working toward the same goal, even though our approaches are different, we were able to achieve our goal.

I look forward to seeing you at The Homestead!
