I’ll be succeeding the very capable George Manos of U.S. Steel as IAMC Board Chair for the next 12 months.
I extend my thanks and appreciation to the board of directors, committee members and staff for their enthusiastic participation and hard work to bring IAMC to its current high state of value and service to its members.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am Director International Real Estate at Kellogg Company, where I’ve worked for three years. Before this, I held CRE positions at Avery Dennison and Kennametal.
I’ve been a member since 2005, so I have a long history with IAMC. My involvement includes chairing the Research Roundtable planning committee, many years on the Education & Research Committee, and several supporting Professional Forum planning roles on the Program Delivery Committee.
I do not have plans to make major changes as IAMC Board Chair. However, I do have a couple of initiatives I’ll be working on.
First, one of my responsibilities as Vice Chair was to oversee strategic planning for 2014 and forward. This effort concluded at the July IAMC Strategic Planning and Board Meetings, where we developed some remarkable recommendations primarily focused on maintaining networking quality at Professional Forums and moderating the pace of membership growth. With respect to the first, we capped Forum attendance at 500. We haven’t reached that number yet, but could in a few years.
Without Associate members IAMC would be incomplete. Associates bring tremendous value to the organization.
With respect to membership growth, we adjusted the policy for admitting new Associate members. Under the new policy, with the addition of two new Active members, each from a company not yet represented in the organization, one new Economic Developer and one new Service Provider are added to the membership roll. Previously, additional Active members from an existing Active member company also triggered adding new Associate members. The new policy will help us grow Active member attendance as a percentage of Forum attendees, which is a plank in IAMC’s strategic plan.
Another leadership issue that interests me is to clearly communicate the value of Active and Associate members. Even though IAMC is an Active-member focused organization, the board of directors and I equally value both membership categories. The misperception that Actives bring more value sometimes results from IAMC’s efforts to regulate the balance of member types at events.
Without regulation, Associates would greatly outnumber Actives at events, making for unsatisfactory networking for both. Further, Actives will eventually become reluctant to attend if they’re greatly outnumbered. From its beginning, IAMC recognized the need to preserve a quality networking balance, and we organize all events to achieve this end.
I certainly do not believe Active members are “better” than Associates. Indeed, without Associate members IAMC would be incomplete. Associates bring tremendous value to the organization. Even so, IAMC must ensure an attractive networking balance at Professional Forums, IAMC Local events and IAMC International meetings.
