Attack on America: The Industry Responds ![]() By JACK LYNE Site Selection Executive Editor of Interactive Publishing
NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, D.C. -- SiteNet Dispatch has learned the names of 18 members of the real estate industry who are listed among the missing in the World Trade Center attacks. (The lists of those reported as missing and surviving is at the end of this feature.)
The names added to those listed as missing now include 13 Washington Group International employees. Formed in July of 2000 following Morrison Knudsen's acquisition of Raytheon Engineers and Constructors, Boise, Idaho-headquartered Washington Group International had 190 employees and contractors in its New York area office. "We have had contact with and confirmed the safety of all but 13 of those who were assigned to our New York area office on September 11th," reported Washington Group International Chairman Dennis Washington (pictured below). ![]() Through its legacy companies, Washington Group has a 21-year history in the World Trade Center. That history dates back to 1980, when Ebasco Services, now part of Washington Group's Infrastructure unit, was one of Two World Trade Center's original tenants. For several years, in fact, Ebasco was the Twin Towers' largest tenant. At one point, the company had more than 2,000 employees occupying some 600,000 sq. ft. (54,000 sq. m.) in 16 floors of Two World Trade Center - floors 77 and 78, and 80 through 93. The number of employees stationed in the World Trade Center was reduced after Raytheon Engineers and Constructors acquired Ebasco in 1993, according to Washington Group officials. The 190 Washington Group employees who were stationed in the WTC were part of the company's Infrastructure unit and its Power and Industrial/Process unit. As reported earlier, officials of the International Development Research Council (IDRC) continue to report that all of the association's members who worked in the WTC area apparently evacuated safely. 67 Union Members Missing SiteNet Dispatch has also learned that the WTC's list of dead or missing includes 67 members of some of the unions that support the real estate industry. The trade groups that have released totals for dead or missing members include:
The Updated Lists Immediately below is a list of the industry's surviving and missing insofar as we have been able to ascertain. The list, however, remains imperfect. For example, in some cases in which all employees have been confirmed as safe, we have listed only company names. In other cases in which employees are missing, we have listed only those individuals who are confirmed as missing. We will continue to update these lists weekly as long as we're aware that some in the industry haven't been accounted for. We urge readers to contact us with any information on the well being of industry professionals who worked in the WTC area and for whom we don't yet have information.
