Woodward: A Rural Success Story

Woodward's new 52,000 sq. ft. shell buildingSuccess has even found its way to Oklahoma's rural communities. Woodward, a small community located in northwest Oklahoma, has seen major expansion from industry, and those expansions have primarily been based on the area's work-force availability, which has been regularly reported through the state's labor surveys.

Woodward is preparing for future growth with it's new 52,000-sq.-ft. (4,831-sq.-m.) shell building, which it is currently marketing with the help of the state and local utility OG&E.
"One of the keys to rural development is to identify available labor, and our labor surveys identify the underemployed folks," says Bussert. "In Woodward -- that's a town of less than 20,000 folks -- we identified 500 available workers there, and that's why Mutual of Omaha is expanding there today."

Mutual of Omaha will add 500 workers to its Woodward operations by year's end. "They've just added 29,000 sq. ft. (2,694 sq. m.) and 300 new employees," says Lavern Phillips, president of the Woodward Industrial Foundation. "That makes this the largest claims processing center in a rural area in the country."

Woodward's available work force has made it most logical for Mutual of Omaha to expand its operations there instead of looking elsewhere. "We have a number of underemployed," says Phillips. "That's one thing that rural areas have is underemployed, due to the limited opportunities for employment. So there's lots of opportunities in Woodward for companies. And we have one of the best vo-tech training programs in the country at the High Plains Institute of Technology, which comes at no cost to employees." SS
