Louisville
Access to the international UPS hub at Jefferson Riverport International is the big draw in Louisville. In 1998, UPS announced its $1 billion Hub 2000 project, creating 6,000 new jobs and making Louisville an almost unstoppable force in the logistics/distribution market.
One company that plans to take full advantage of UPS's services is Guess, a designer jeans and casual wear manufacturer. Guess has relocated all of its distribution and e-commerce business from Los Angeles to Louisville. The new 500,000-sq.-ft. (46,452-sq.-m.), highly automated distribution center will initially employ 300 workers.
Logistics is not Louisville's only strong point, however. The University of Louisville, especially its school of medicine, is also a magnet for new business. Through the governor's Research Challenge Trust Fund, the university was able to attract Dr. Suzanne Ildstad, a pioneering researcher in the biomedical sciences, along with a team of about 40 other researchers.
And SHPS, a healthcare management company, decided to locate its corporate headquarters in Louisville as well. The $80 million investment will result in 3,000 jobs. As part of the project, SHPS will develop a campus totaling 450,000 sq. ft. (41,806 sq. m.).
