Ohio Rings in the New Millennium

Central Ohio: The Heart of Distribution

With its central location at the intersection of both north-south and east-west interstates and state highways, it seems like all roads lead to Columbus. Perhaps that's why so many distribution facilities are finding the capital city's appeal too great to resist.

0003_oh6.jpg - 9831 Bytes General Motors Corp. recently selected Groveport Commerce Center for its 504,000-sq.-ft. (46,823-sq.-m.) distribution center. The facility is one of three new AC Delco replacement auto parts facilities announced by GM last year, and it will serve independent distributors and retailers of AC Delco parts.

In Columbus, however, even distribution goes high tech, with e-commerce firms setting up shop there. SubmitOrder.com has opted to put a new distribution complex in Groveport to keep up with the e-commerce service and third-party logistics demands brought on by the new Internet-based economy. The Dublin, Ohio-based logistics provider, which is a division of Digital Storage, has agreed to lease 437,000 sq. ft. (40,599 sq. m.) of space at the Groveport Commerce Center. SubmitOrder.com provides its clients with information technology, customer support and logistics help, and its clients include such names as Kodak.com and the Internet retail division of Zany Brainy, an educational toys retailer.

Above right: Rickenbacker International Airport's air cargo capabilities have helped make Columbus a major hub for distribution and logistics operations.
Other logistics-related firms hope to take advantage of the distribution facilities moving into the Columbus area as well. Los Angeles-based Stevens Air Transport has opened a new air cargo facility at the Port Columbus International Airport. Stevens Air Transport specializes in larger industrial cargo, rather than small packages and documents.

Columbus's economy is based on much more than just distribution, however. It also focuses on such industries as electronic commerce like SubmitOrder.com, manufacturing, research and development, and the services sector.

Columbus Along with distribution, manufacturing has become more advanced in the Columbus market as well. Olan Plastics, which produces insert molding and thermo-plastic injection molds and specializes in cost-effective conversions of metal parts to plastic, has recorded more than 20 industrial design patents and the company continues to prosper. Recently Olan Plastics opened a new 30,000-sq.-ft. (2,787-sq.-m.) custom injection molding manufacturing plant in Canal Winchester.

Service-oriented operations like call centers have also found Columbus a good location for setting up shop. SubmitOrder.com, for instance, plans to add a customer service center to its administrative offices in Dublin, where it already has one call center that employs approximately 100 workers.

Above: Companies like GM and SubmitOrder.com have found Columbus to be a distribution mecca.
Interactive Teleservices Corp. (ITC), one of the nation's fastest-growing telemarketing companies, found Columbus such a good site that it moved its headquarters from Lincoln, Neb., to Ohio's capital city. ITC is also establishing a telemarketing call center in Columbus, where it will create approximately 280 jobs.

Lee Johnson, the state development director, says, "With the addition of Interactive Teleservices headquarters to the Columbus area, the central Ohio region continues to emerge as a leading center for business growth." SS
