Some 25,900 private-sector jobs were created on Long Island between September 1998 and September 1999, an increase of 2.6 percent over the prior year -- and above the national job-creation average of 2.2 percent. Those jobs are being created by a wide range of firms. Infosys International, a minority-owned software and technology firm, is purchasing a new corporate headquarters building in Plainview, Nassau County. The expansion creates 52 new jobs and retains 25 existing jobs.
ABOVE RIGHT: Montauk, Long Island, still retains the quiet, rustic atmosphere that has lured fishermen and nature lovers for more than 300 years. Simply Lite Foods Corp., which services the sugar-free confectionery market under the licensed name of Sweet 'N Low, is consolidating manufacturing and packaging operations from various other states at its 55,000-sq.-ft. (5,110-sq.-m.) Commack facility. The move will add 161 jobs. Some 30 jobs are being added at Megaknits' 90,000-sq.-ft. (8,361-sq.-m.) West Hempstead facility. The company knits yarn into sweater fabric, which is then cut and sewn to make garments. Other expanding firms include Silver Lake Cookie Co., which has built an additional 40,000 sq. ft. (3,716 sq. m.) of production space in Islip, and USA Industries, a Bayshore manufacturer of auto parts, which is undertaking a $1.1 million expansion that will create 45 jobs. ©2000 Conway Data, Inc.
