The Beat Goes On

Location information provided by Norcross, Ga.-based Conway Data Inc.'s New Plants Database (see chart) indicates that Kosmont is correct in saying that business is willing to give California a chance. IDEC Pharmaceuticals, for example, chose Oceanside last year for its $1.25 billion biotech manufacturing facility, while Chase invested $650 million in San Francisco for a new headquarters operation. Major job producers like Veritas Software (3,000 jobs in Milpitas), Stater Brothers (2,400) and Convergys Corp. (1,000 in Fresno) also chose California for new facilities. These companies cover everything from biotech and financial services to software, distribution and customer care -- all fairly energy-intensive operations.

Many companies so desire a California location that they will find their own ways of dealing with the energy crisis. U.S. DataPort Inc. plans to develop an onsite energy generation facility for its $1.2 billion Silicon Valley Internet Campus. Calpine C*Power will build and operate the Critical Reliable Energy Center, which will generate chilled water and 99.9999 percent reliable electricity for data center users.
The 2.2 million-sq.-ft. (185,806-sq.-m.) data center, with its 1,100 new technology jobs, shows that there is more to California than an energy crisis. "As the capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose will serve as an exceptional location for U.S. DataPort's Internet Campus," says Grant Sedgwick, president and CEO of U.S. DataPort. "The San Jose site is strategically located with access to high-capacity fiber networks, an exceptional labor force and major transportation corridors."
