Lockheed Opens $30M Space Center The Lockheed Martin Mississippi Space & Technology Center opened in August at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County with the anticipation of creating 270 jobs. Built with $30 million in state and county funds, the 220,000-sq.-ft. (20,400 sq.-m.) facility will provide advanced propulsion, thermal and metrology technology. The facility is a partnership between two of Lockheed's Space Systems and Technology Services business areas plus the state, county and NASA. Space Systems will operate a spacecraft propulsion and thermal system product center while Technology Services will establish an integrated metrology center as well as provide engineering and manufacturing services. The center will produce thrusters used for satellites and other Lockheed Martin spacecraft. Thermal controls systems produced there, such as thermal blankets, heat pipes, radiators and engine heat shields, will protect space vehicles from extreme temperatures. The new Lockheed Center will add to the Stennis Space Center's annual global economic impact of $736 million, according to the latest available figures. The economic impact on areas with a 50-mile radius is estimated at $497 million. |
