ollar-wise, investment was up in Oklahoma in 2002 compared to 2001, according to the Oklahoma Dept. of Commerce. New and expanding manufacturers and processors announced projects totaling more than US$558 million with a promise of nearly 3,500 jobs over the next three years. In 2001, firms announced $315 million in investment with more than 4,000 jobs.
The trend continues in early 2003 as the state's tire manufacturing sector continues to grow with major expansions. Meanwhile, the area around Oklahoma City is a draw for knowledge-based industries.
Sanders Mitchell, administrator of MidAmerica Industrial Park in Pryor Creek, believes the state's economy is rebounding. He says MidAmerica will be spending $100 million over the next decade on infrastructure improvements to remain attractive to industrial prospects.
"All indications are that we are showing signs of recovery," Mitchell says. "Some of our plants are hiring back and some are thriving."
