Recovery, Not Growth

For other companies, the uptick in new orders might not mean expansion. Why? For the most part, existing facilities remain more than capable of handling the growth in orders.
AMT's Gardner offers a frank assessment of the situation. "Yes, orders [for machine tools] were up 30 percent in 2004 over 2003," he notes. "But orders were off 60 percent each year between 1998 and 2002, so this only means that '04 will be the second worst year in 70 years." Gardner, whose group represents the interests of factory equipment manufacturers, predicts that very few of AMT's members will be doing new plant openings any time soon. He adds that the association has lost 10 percent of its member companies in the last few years.
