GREAT LAKES REGIONAL REVIEW
Renewable Energy Powering Up
Projects related to various forms of alternative energy are all the rage these days and that's true along the Great Lakes shores. Sault St. Marie, Ont., is the scene of a joint venture between steel maker Algoma Steel and SIAG (Schaaf Industries Corporation) of Germany. The firms will establish a wind tower manufacturing facility on a site adjacent to the Algoma steelworks. The US$30-million project will have the capacity to produce 180 wind towers annually and will eventually employ 140. Ethanol is also in the mix along the lakes. Marysville Ethanol is building a $95-million plant in Marysville, Mich., near Port Huron. Operations will begin in 2007 and the facility will produce more than 50 million gallons a year, using 18 million bushels of corn. In Windsor, Ont., Commercial Alcohols is investing in a $102-million facility. |
