QUÉBEC SPOTLIGHT
Aerospace Also Makes Gains
With the post- 9- 11 aerospace recovery fueling increased business, Québec's traditional stalwart sector remains robust.
CMC Electronics, which manufactures electronics for the aviation and global positioning markets, is spending CA$20.3 million (US$17.8 million) to expand its Montréal facility and create 165 jobs. GE Canada, which employs more than 2,700 at three Québec plants, is investing nearly $22 million (US$19.3 million) in its Bromont plant to manufacture high- complexity components for various aircraft engines. GE says the project will create 122 jobs. The plant makes fan and compressor blading for various GE engines, including the CFM56 engine built by CFM International a 50- 50 joint venture between GE and French firm Snecma. The project follows a US$8.1- million, 100- job expansion announced in 2005. Advanced Aero Corp. is expanding its facility at Saint- Jean- sur- Richelieu as it ramps up to produce its Seawind four- seater amphibian airplane. The Seawind has been sold since 1990 in a ready- to- assemble form. The company plans to begin manufacturing the plane once it receives Transport Canada certification. Made of composite materials, the plane sells for about US$360,000. Advanced Aero says it will create about 160 jobs and already has advance orders for 80 planes. |
