Global Airport Project Update

ASIA
        • Abu Dhabi International Airport, in the United Arab Emirates, is undergoing a $230-million expansion that includes construction of a 13,450-ft. (4,100-m.) runway, a new satellite terminal and two new, 91,500-sq.-ft. (8,500-sq.-m.) cargo-storage buildings.
        • Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, the third largest cargo airport in China, is in the midst of a major expansion that will help it rival Hong Kong's international airport as a hub for southern China.
        • The nine-year-old Kansai International Airport, near Osaka, Japan, is adding a second runway that is scheduled to be operational in 2007. The expansion should generate new economic activity worth $94 billion, according to government estimates.
        • The new Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which opened in 1998, accommodates up to 25 million passengers per year. Phase Two of the project, now under way, will add enough capacity to handle 35 million people by 2008.
        • Bangkok, Thailand, is getting a new international airport, named Suvarnabhumi. Scheduled to open in August 2005, the airport will feature a 2-million-sq.-ft. (190,000-sq.-m.) cargo terminal, an electrical railway system and express freight facilities.
        • Freight and logistics provider DHL plans to begin construction in 2004 on a large-scale freight terminal at Inchon International Airport near Seoul, S. Korea. The project will help DHL expand its Asian and Australian operations.

EUROPE
        • Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, due to open in 2007, will replace the German capital's two existing airports, Tempelhof and Tegel. Plans call for a direct motorway connection to the city center as well as high-speed train service.
        • In Spain, Madrid's Barajas International Airport expansion is scheduled to be completed in 2004; Barajas is the eighth-largest cargo airport in Europe.
        • Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport is being upgraded to the tune of approximately $1 billion. A decade-long project, the upgrade will increase passenger capacity from 11 million to 30 million annually.
        • A fifth expansion is under way at Zurich, Switzerland's airport with construction slated to be complete in 2005. New terminals, transportation links and restructured road links are among the project's features.
        • Sofia (Bulgaria) Airport is in the midst of a redevelopment plan that will last through 2010. Phase two, currently under way, includes construction of a cargo terminal and reconstruction and expansion of the existing runway, taxiway and apron system.

THE AMERICAS
        • Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in August 2003 authorized the $6.6-billion expansion of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, which now needs FAA approval.
        • Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport will be part of a $270-million expansion plan that will encompass modernization of regional airports in Queretaro, Pachuca and Puebla that will more than double capacity in the region.
        • Miami International Airport is undergoing a vast capital improvement process involving more than $5 billion of investment. Among the improvements in the works is an expansion of the cargo facilities to accommodate a doubling of cargo volumes over the next 20 years.
        • A $230-million expansion of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport includes a rail connection to a new passenger concourse.
        • Washington Dulles International Airport is expanding to keep up with ever-increasing volumes of passengers and cargo. A fourth runway and a new control tower are among the improvements in the works.
        • Lima, Peru's international airport is the recipient of a $1.2 billion, 30-year commitment to upgrade the facility. Among the plan's components are a new runway, an air-sea cargo hub and a new passenger terminal.
