EDA OFFERS ONE-STOP SHOPPING FOR TECH COMPANIES SEEKING FACILITIES, FINANCING OR TRAINING ON HOW TO OPERATE A BUSINESS

High-technology companies seeking quality space to grow, or financing to acquire facilities or develop and market their innovative products, can find the help they need at the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA). New and aspiring entrepreneurs can even get specialized training if they want to learn more about running a successful technology business. It's one-stop shopping at its best.
A 50-acre, state-of-the-art Technology Centre of New Jersey being developed by the EDA in North Brunswick provides growing high-tech businesses with top-quality, customized laboratory, production and office space at competitive prices. The EDA recently made 86,000 square feet of prime space suitable for biotech, pharmaceutical and microelectronics companies available for immediate lease at the Tech Centre. It includes a new two-story, 60,000-square-foot core and shell facility that can be subdivided into 15,000-square-foot units and a single-story 26,000-square-foot lab structure.
The 20,000-square-foot Commercialization Center for Innovative Technologies at the Tech Centre represents the state's innovative approach to serving small high-tech firms and incubator facility graduates. It is an important component of Gov. James E. McGreevey's strategy to support and promote scientific discovery and the growth of technology-related jobs in New Jersey. Tenants have access to quality lab space and common services, such as conference and media rooms, reception, shipping and receiving areas, and a sterilization machine. A network of strategic partners also makes available other discounted services to tenant firms covering accounting, regulatory compliance, environmental waste management, human resources, insurance, law and marketing.
If your need is financing, the EDA also has provided nearly $10 million in low-cost loans to 28 different emerging and second-stage New Jersey technology companies through its New Jersey Seed Capital and New Jersey Technology Funding programs. In addition, the Technology Business Tax Certificate Transfer Program allows new or expanding technology businesses to turn their tax losses and credits into cash by selling them to other New Jersey companies. More than 400 businesses have been awarded $170 million in the first four years of this EDA-administered program.
High-tech entrepreneurs who may know a lot about their technology but not much about running a business can take advantage of the Entrepreneurial Training Institute, an eight-week program sponsored by the New Jersey Development Authority for Small Businesses, Minorities' and Women's Enterprises, whose programs are managed by the EDA. The novel training course is designed to teach the basics of building a business plan and operating a business. The class also gives students the opportunity to network with other high-tech entrepreneurs and with professionals who work with the high-tech industry, from lenders to venture capitalists and angel investors.
