Virginia Beach is "Rising" to Meet the Needs of a Growing City
Great cities make strategic investments to expand and diversify their tax bases, create high paying jobs and provide new benefits and amenities for their citizens and visitors.
Virginia Beach is doing just that at The Town Center of Virginia Beach, located in its burgeoning Pembroke Central Business District, in the heart of the city and several miles inland from its famed oceanfront. The 17-block, 25-acre, $350-million public/private partnership is exceeding all expectations with a growing mix of class A office space, high end retail shops, luxury apartments, outstanding restaurants, entertainment venues and free structured parking. Phase III, announced in November, will include a 30-story tower housing a luxury Westin Hotel as well as 18 floors of upscale condominiums. When completed in spring 2007, it will be the tallest building in the region, supplanting a 21-story office complex that began the Town Center renaissance. The Residences at Westin will actually be the second housing opportunity at The Town Center, joining a 350-unit luxury apartment building called The Cosmopolitan that is currently under construction. The Town Center's growing menu of popular dining options includes Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Changs China Bistro, California Pizza Kitchen, Red Star Tavern, Bravo! Cucina Italiana, The Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant, and Keagan's Irish Pub & Restaurant. Ruth's Chris Steak House opens in early 2005. At the same time, Ann Taylor Loft will join a rising number of quality retailers, and by 2006 the development will host a new 1200 seat, $46-million community Performing Arts Center. Virginia Beach is also focusing attention on its resort area. Phase One of a $208-million convention center is nearing completion just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, and upscale Hilton and Marriott Hotels are close to opening, or just announced, to serve visitors, conference attendees and trade show participants. The City, the most populous in the Commonwealth of Virginia with more than 435,000 residents, is also making substantial enhancements to its educational system with extensive renovations of many older school buildings and the addition of specialized academies in technology, law, health care and math/science. The Advanced Technology Center or ATC, the heart of what makes Virginia Beach the Perfect MATCH for talented citizens and quality employers, is graduating a host of highly trained students, adding to a superb labor force, many of whom are highly disciplined and well-skilled military retirees. No wonder leading companies like Stihl, Geico, AMSEC/SAIC, Cendant Car Rental Group (Avis/Budget), and Amerigroup are expanding their presence and adding new jobs. The Department of Economic Development (DED), recently rated one of the best in the nation by Site Selection Magazine, has excellent sites and buildings currently available in conveniently situated office and industrial parks in the city's busy commerce corridors. DED staff is eager to help new and expanding business and industry maximize their economic potential.
