Pfizer is beginning construction of its $200-million, 330,000-sq.-ft. (30,657-sq.-m.) research facility in Chesterfield, Mo., a complex that when complete in late 2008 will bring the campus employment to more than 1,000. About 250 employees will relocate to Chesterfield from offices around the St. Louis area. "Our goal for several years has been to create a unified and integrated research and development site that would bring all of our scientific work to a single location," said Daniel P Getman, vice president and St. Louis site director for Pfizer. Sean Nugent, senior director for Pfizer, chairs the IAMC Program Delivery committee.
Novartis unit CIBA Vision Corp., headquartered in Duluth, Ga., has announced it will invest approximately $132 million to construct an integrated contact lens manufacturing plant in the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor, Malaysia. According to the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority, there are presently 151 medical device manufacturers in Malaysia with a total investment of more than $1.2 billion. Exports of medical devices in 2004 amounted to $130 million, with the U.S. as the main export market. The investment follows on a May 2005 announcement of a $250-million complex in Singapore that will employ 500 and serve as CIBA Vision's Asia-Pacific supply chain hub. Ron Grossmann, senior real estate specialist for New Jersey-based Novartis, is an IAMC member.
