High on the Hog
The largest U.S. project in the food processing sector was announced in November 2005. Dalhart, Texas, is the site chosen by Hilmar Cheese to build a new cheese and whey protein processing plant. The company's first facility outside of its Hilmar, Calif., headquarters and manufacturing operation, the new plant will employ 120, with the first phase to be completed in fall 2007. Four of the top 10 food processing projects in North America were for the processing of pork products, including a project in East Moline, Ill., from Triumph Foods, which just embarked on a major new plant in St. Joseph, Mo., the year before. Two of the top food projects had sugar on top. In Budalangi, Busia District, Kenya, Spanish firm Riegos Agricola Espanole SA (RAESA) announced in early 2005 that it is planning to invest a total of $240 million in both a plant and in plants: $140 million in a modern sugar processing facility and $120 million in sugar cane cultivation. The company is also considering another Kenyan processing plant investment, in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay District. According to a December 2005 document called "Africa Project Access" from the Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute, RAESA also has expressed interest in the $200-million Luena Sugar Project in Luapula Province, Zambia. Another top sugar project is the investment in Reserve, La., by Cargill. |
