ABMiller, one of the world's largest brewers, is investing heavily in Latin America, with projects announced recently in Colombia and Peru to keep pace with growing demand in the region.
The group's Colombian subsidiary Bavaria will invest $175 million in a new brewery in Yumbo, on the outskirts of Cali in western Colombia. The new brewery, which will employ 200, will become operational by late 2007 and replaces a much smaller, antiquated facility that is nearly 80 years old.
In Peru, SABMiller's Peruvian subsidiary Backus & Johnston will invest $102 million to expand facilities in Ate, build a new brew house at its Motupe brewery and upgrade its package capability across the country.
Survey Says London Is Still Hard to Beat
T
hose considering only a European location will find Cushman & Wakefield's annual location survey, European Cities Monitor, to be of interest. The survey is based on interviews with more than 500 location decision makers at European companies and ranks the cities according to how they scored in 12 areas.
In 2006, London, Paris and Frankfurt retain their first, second and third place 2005 finishes, respectively, with London slightly improving on its weighted score to 0.91 from 0.87 the previous year. Rounding out the top five are fourth-place Barcelona and fifth-place Brussels. In 2005, Barcelona was fifth and Brussels fourth.
"The Catalan capital [of Barcelona] has been one of the fastest risers in the ranking since ECM was first launched in 1990," says Elaine Rossall, head of European business space research at Cushman & Wakefield, adding that the city does the most of any to improve itself as a business location. "This goes to support the view that the more a city is perceived to promote itself, the more it will be perceived as a good business location."
The 12 criteria factored into the survey and the city claiming first place in each criterion are: easy access to markets (London); qualified staff (London); external transport links (London); telecommunications links (London); cost of staff (Warsaw); climate governments create (Dublin); value for money of office space (Warsaw); availability of office space (London); languages spoken (London); internal transport (London); quality of life (Barcelona); and freedom from pollution (Stockholm).
