Aluminum giant Novelis Inc. last week announced the production of what it said was the world’s first-ever aluminum coil made entirely from 100% recycled, end-of-life automotive scrap (pictured). Developed and produced for the European automotive market and suitable for car body outer skin applications, the product “marks a significant step toward greater circularity and sustainability in the automotive industry,” the company said.
The scrap was sourced through the Automotive Circularity Platform (ACP), which was initiated together with thyssenkrupp Materials Services, a mill-independent materials distribution and supply chain service provider. “As an open platform, ACP aims to streamline access to high-quality end-of-life material for recycling by digitalizing the market for secondary materials, enhancing supply chain efficiency and maximizing material recovery from vehicles at the end of the consumer-use cycle,” Novelis said.
Sustainability and digitalization put us in mind of “Turning Analytics Into Action: The Digital Journey of Novelis,” a feature from Site Selection’s Workforce 2022 publication that documented how the company was ahead of the curve in introducing automation to the production process and having employees buy in to the possibilities it offers.

While nuclear power is being looked to as a future and necessary power source for the growing fleet of data centers, Rhodium Group says not to forget about geothermal potential. A new report documents how some of the nation’s hottest data center markets, led by Phoenix, DFW and Las Vegas, have behind-the-meter geothermal capacity to supply a healthy percentage of power demand.
“We find that if the growth patterns of data centers follow historical clustering trends, geothermal could economically meet up to 64% of expected demand growth by the early 2030s under our baseline assumptions,” the report states. “If data centers locate in areas with the best geothermal resource, geothermal has the potential to meet all projected data center demand growth at prices 31-45% lower than in a clustered approach.”
Among the sources used by Rhodium Group is the GeoMap tool developed by Austin, Texas-based Project InnerSpace. Concurrent with the new findings, the company this month launched a new data center module in its GeoMap tool that it says “will inform data center developers about the most promising locations for geothermal development, both in the United States and around the globe.”

Ever heard of the Kaiserstuhl eleven peaks? You might have if you’re a wine connoisseur. A release last week from Eleven Hills winery and the Oberbergen Winegrowers’ Cooperative eG in Oberbergen, Germany, included this striking image of the area whose volcanic heritage has helped produce burgundy wines since 1271. “Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are the autochthonous grape varieties of the Kaiserstuhl — an extinct volcano created in the Tertiary more than 50 million years ago,” the release stated.
