The New York Times this week examined how Spain and other countries facing water shortages are turning to desalination plants. Desalination is a solution that was long championed by Site Selection and Conway Data founder McKinley “Mac” Conway, including a January 2008 piece he authored three years before his passing entitled “Decision Time for Desalt Plants.” Mark Arend in 2006 looked at Spain’s “Project AGUA” plan in particular, as a drought, then as now, threatened the country’s water supply.

A newsletter from the American Public Media program Marketplace alerted us to this week’s planned inauguration of Nusantara, the new $33 billion capital city of Indonesia located on the island of Borneo, 800 miles away from the former capital of Jakarta, a metro area home to 30 million people. One way to get a complete picture of this “capital city in the forest” is via NASA’s Earth Observatory, which posted this informative report in February featuring satellite images of the site showing rapid progress in a mere two years.
BCI Global’s Josefien Glaudemans last November considered in an exclusive Site Selection Online Insider whether Nusantara might be an “out-of-the-box” location for support centers and software development.

Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon yesterday celebrated the opening of its new main terminal, which doubles the airport’s capacity. The terminal is part of an overall $2.15 billion expansion that will be completed in 2026. Among the amenities and special touches: 96 beers on tap with a full view of the runway at Loyal Legion; 100,000 hardwood tiles made from Oregon white oak grown, harvested and milled in the Willamette Valley; Blue Star Donuts; and, by the end of construction, more than 5,000 living plants.
