In the state that put the world on wheels, writes Gary Daughters, “there is emerging a strategic symbiosis” to fortify Michigan as No. 1 in the seismic transition of the automotive industry.

The ad below from LILCO and The New Long Island Partnership appeared in the October 1994 issue of Site Selection. Notable on the ad’s fanciful map are a number of employers and institutions still playing a strong role in Long Island’s economy and appeal (and a few who are not). Any Deadhead who sees Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum thinks back to their favorite concert bootleg from that storied venue where the band played 42 times between 1973 and 1994. Today the site is at the center of a proposed $6 billion casino resort from Las Vegas Sands if proper lease terms can be reached and approved by authorities. Avis moved its HQ to New Jersey in 2001 as part of its purchase by Cendant, and today still resides there as Avis Budget Group. Meanwhile, Canon USA proudly still calls Melville home, and has seen its LEED-Gold Americas HQ there (pictured above) named the best office building on Long Island several times.

A photo of Deutsche Bahn’s marshalling yard in Maschen, near Hamburg in Lower Saxony, gets abstract with the very real volume of rail freight handled by the Germany railroad. Last July saw the completion of a €230 million, five-year project to upgrade the facility, one of Europe’s largest marshalling yards. DB together with the Germany government continues to implement its “Strong Rail” investment strategy.
“In 2023, we made upfront expenditures and did more construction than ever before because we cannot delay overhauling and modernizing our infrastructure,” said DB CEO Dr. Richard Lutz in March. “But 2023 also marks a turning point: Together with the German government, we launched the largest and most comprehensive capital expenditure program since the German Rail Reform in 1994. No more running our rail infrastructure into the ground — it’s time to overhaul and modernize it from top to bottom. Thanks to the major increase in budgetary funding from the German government, we are able to make additional expenditures of roughly €30 billion.”
