A year after opening its Reno, Nevada, location American Battery Technology Co. will establish its next battery recycling facility in South Carolina.

As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s $3 billion investment into domestic lithium-ion battery manufacturing, American Battery Technology Company was awarded $150 million to establish a new site. The company will use the funding to construct a commercial scale lithium-ion battery recycling plant in Abbeville County, South Carolina. By 2025, battery-grade materials such as nickel, cobalt, magnesium and copper will be produced. The facility anticipates an annual capacity of about 100,000 metric tons of battery materials to be processed, creating 330 direct jobs. This investment will establish the company’s second battery recycling plant, following the opening of its Reno, Nevada, facility in 2023.

Healthy Growth Hits North Carolina

Global consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser aims to expand its pharmaceutical sector with a new facility east of Raleigh in Wilson County, North Carolina. The new $145.6 million manufacturing facility will be catered to producing the company’s liquid and oral solid dose medication Mucinex. “With its prominence as a life science innovation hub, North Carolina is an ideal place for Reckitt to establish its U.S. regional manufacturing center,” said Reckitt Benckiser CEO Kris Licht. “This strategic, onshoring investment will build resiliency and agility in our supply chain and further drives our mission to create a healthier world by increasing access to important medicines.” Once operational, the facility will create 289 new jobs in the region. The project has received a total of $6.4 million in state incentives and potentially will receive up to $16.2 million in local and county incentives.

England’s Got Data

Blackstone will boost England’s AI sector with new data center investment.

A $10 billion move has been made by New York-based investment company Blackstone to establish one of Europe’s largest data centers to date. The planned AI data center will be constructed in northeastern England in the coastal town of Blyth. “The UK is a top investment market for Blackstone because of its powerful combination of talent and innovation along with a highly transparent legal system,” said Blackstone President and COO Jon Gray. “We are making significant commitments to building social housing, facilitating the energy transition, growing life sciences companies and developing critical infrastructure needed to fuel the digital economy.” The project announcement comes one month after data centers were designated as critical national infrastructure by government officials in the United Kingdom. The facility will create more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs once construction begins in 2025.
