Press Release Site Selection Names Canada’s Best Locations and 2016’s Top US Utilities in Economic Development Atlanta, September 1, 2016: Ontario is the most competitive province in a competitive nation, followed by upstart New Brunswick and Québec. And metro areas from Greater Toronto and Montréal to Moncton, Vancouver and Winnipeg head Site Selection’s annual list of top Canadian economic development groups (see full list below). Those are the conclusions reached as Site Selection publishes in its new September issue its tenth annual Canada’s Best Locations awards and rankings, based on April 2015-March 2016 corporate end-user facility investment and job creation data derived from the publication’s proprietary Conway Projects Database and the magazine’s own research. The Canadian Competitiveness Award, this year awarded to the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, goes to the leading province based on data derived from qualifying new corporate facilities and expansions. The Top Canadian Groups are local or regional economic development groups ranked based on project data, regional partnership, proactive and innovative programming, and quality data and Web tools and resources. “His Excellency the Right Honorable David Johnston, Canada’s Governor General, put it best when he told me, ‘We are deeply interested in the innovation process,’ part of an overall national vision that encompasses what he calls the five Cs of an innovation culture — curiosity, capability, creativity, collaboration and celebration,” says Adam Bruns, managing editor of Site Selection. “These economic development organizations are helping to make that vision come true, within a national framework that includes a few more Cs — commerce, community and, in the case of immigration and refugee policy, compassion.” Not only is Ontario leading the way with proactive programs and policies, its regions and municipalities are too: Half of the 10 Top Canadian Groups hail from the province. The Canada’s Best Locations 2016 report includes a Canadian economic development directory, and is posted at www.siteselection.com. “The annual Canada’s Best Locations feature sheds additional light on Canada’s many location options for corporate site selectors,” says Mark Arend, editor in chief of Site Selection. “We salute the provinces and communities that made this year’s rankings.” Top Utilities in Economic Development Also featured in the September issue are Site Selection’s annual rankings of Top US Utilities in Economic Development (see list below), based on analysis of corporate end-user project activity in 2015 in that company’s territory (from Conway Projects Database and submitted materials from utilities); website tools and data; innovative programs and incentives for business, including energy efficiency and renewable energy programs; and the utility’s own job-creating infrastructure and facility investment trends. “This year’s Top Utilities are the class of their field when it comes to economic development teamwork,” says Managing Editor Adam Bruns of the rankings Site Selection has published since 1999. “Serving the utility needs of existing, expanding and new companies can mean making a lot more connections than the electrical kind.” “Utilities play a key role as participants in the economic development efforts of cities, regions and all areas working to improve their local business climate,” says Editor-in-Chief Mark Arend. “This year’s Top Utilities were particularly successful in this endeavor in 2015.” In addition to an array of state spotlights, industry reports and Investment Profiles, the new issue of Site Selection includes analysis of the impact of the UK Brexit vote from a braintrust of experts on foreign direct investment. It also includes exclusive contributions on infrastructure from author, TV host and professional engineering explainer Prof. Henry Petroski; logistics and resilience from author and thought leader Prof. Yossi Sheffi, head of the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics; and rural economic development from Prager Co. President Adam Prager. Site Selection magazine, published by Conway Inc., delivers expansion planning information to 45,000 executives of fast-growing firms.
