ge is a state of mind, say those who take in stride turning, say, 40, 50 or 60. Trying to dodge the inevitable is futile.

In the publishing business, we look forward to such milestones, and the bigger the birthday, the better. Longevity, especially in larger measures, validates the vision of the original publisher (especially when the original publisher is the current publisher).

Here at Site Selection, we are preparing to celebrate our 50th anniversary. As the January 2004 issue will detail, Conway Data began publishing Site Selection in 1954, years, decades even, before other such magazines were launched. And we are eager to embark on the next 50 years.

Keeping the ship on course involves the efforts of many people – both here on staff and in the corporate real estate and economic development fields. Our year-old Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) is central to our ability to deliver award-winning content to readers of our online and print versions.

I am pleased to introduce four new members of the board, three of whom are Industrial Asset Management Council directors for the 2003-2004 year. They are Charles P. McSwain, Vice President, CSX, and Vice Chairman of IAMC; William E. Pearson, Vice President, BASF Corp., and IAMC Treasurer; and Greg Long, Corporate Real Estate Director, Hallmark Cards (tentative addition at press time). My thanks to the three IAMC board members who have served on the EAB for the past year: Jack Brophy, past-Chairman of IAMC; Roger Beck, retired from Dow Corning; and Pat McKee, Director of Business at McGough Construction, Phoenix.

Also joining the EAB at this time is Ronnie L. Bryant, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, a non-profit economic development group serving a 10-county region in southwestern Pennsylvania. Bryant, a 23-year economic development expert, serves on numerous boards and panels, including the board of directors and executive committee of the International Economic Development Council.

Another member of the EAB, Ed Rondeau, has recently completed work on his latest book, The Facility Manager’s Guide to Finance & Budgeting, which he co-authored with David Cotts. Rondeau, an IFMA (International Facility Management Assoc.) Fellow, most recently directed global operations at Conway Data. Written from a practitioner’s perspective, the book should be required reading for anyone entering the facilities management profession – or corporate real estate, for that matter. Ed can be reached at edmond.p.rondeau@att.net.

So look for these experts’ insights between the lines and elsewhere as Site Selection sets course for the next 50 years. The world may be getting smaller, faster and more complex, but we promise to keep up with – and ahead of – the curve.

Till next time,
