Canada Also Stocks Global Pantries

Canada's food processing industry is diverse, supplying North America and beyond.
Here's a look at some recent significant projects:
  • Switzerland-based Jungbunzlauer International, a producer of natural, biodegradable ingredients for the food, beverage and other industries, opened a new CA$100 million facility in Port Colborne, Ontario, in August, to process fermentation feedstock supplied by Casco Inc. into citric acid. The plant will serve markets in North, Central, and South America.

  • In June, Quaker Tropicana Gatorade opened its new Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario. Also in Mississauga, General Mills announced a new Canadian head office. The three-story, 112,982-sq.-ft. (10,496-sq.-m.) facility, just south of Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport, is scheduled to open late this year.

  • Cargill is building a CA$45 million meat processing plant in Chambly, Quebec that will create about 600 jobs. The plant will process ready-for-sale beef, pork, minced meat and sausage products. Cargill says labor availability, good infrastructure and proximity to the Montreal market were factors in the site decision.

  • With demand for soy-based foods burgeoning, Sunrise Soya Foods is opening a new tofu factory in Toronto. The plant will employ more than 50 when it opens this fall. Sunrise says the facility is needed to ease the production load of its first plant in Vancouver.
