NYC Gets Online Food Service Firm The online food delivery service sector, which has had its moments of indigestion during its early years (including the failure of WebVan), may be poised for a comeback if a recent New York project is any indication. FreshDirect will invest $100 million and create 652 jobs in Long Island City. Operating from a 300,000-sq.-ft. (27,879-sq.-m.) processing and distribution center in the borough of Queens, the company began testing its service in July on Roosevelt Island with Battery Park City operations launching in September.         FreshDirect plans a steady expansion to select Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods. From there, the company hopes to spread its service to office parks and major employers in Nassau and Suffolk counties. FreshDirect has an ambitious goal of servicing the top 10 U.S. metro regions by 2005. FreshDirect is eligible to apply for a $500,000 training grant from Empire State Development's Jobs Now Program. The company is the brainchild of Joe Fedele, co-founder of the Fairway Uptown grocery chain, and business partner Jason Ackerman.
