Buffalo Poised to Be
Biomedical Powerhouse

Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will develop more than 1.8 million square feet of space dedicated to clinical, research and medical education purposes over the next 10 to 15 years.
It's been a heady high-tech year for the city many associate with fried chicken wings and snowstorms. In September 2002, initial dirt was shoveled for the $140-million Life Sciences Complex in downtown Buffalo. The more than 400,000-sq.-ft. (37,200-sq.-m.) complex will include two connected buildings for the Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics. The project is part of the massive Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus plan which will create about 1.8 million sq. ft. (167,200 sq. m.) of new clinical and research buildings.
A few weeks earlier, Dell Computer and the University of Buffalo (SUNY) announced one of the largest clusters of Linux servers ever at a U.S. educational institution. The 2000-server cluster is being used by the Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics to conduct research that may eventually help speed drugs to market to combat cancer, Alzheimer's disease, AIDS and other diseases.
