The Keystone State looks to regional partnerships to strengthen tradition and innovation.
by ADAM BRUNS

P

erhaps no territory in the United States encompasses the breadth of cultures, economies and industries found between the Delaware and Ohio Rivers. The Keystone State's attributes stretch from biotech in Pittsburgh to the rapidly reconfiguring industrial profile of the Lehigh Valley, which recently landed the headquarters of Olympus America. Greater Philadelphia has its own biotech strengths, in addition to the financial services and headquarters clout that has always been its calling card.
These three metros and many smaller communities are simultaneously realizing the benefits of truly collaborative regional economic development. Now their efforts are buttressed by the state's "New Day" economic stimulus package -- launched in June 2004 --which includes billions of dollars in grants, loans and other funds; brownfield redevelopment; tax increment financing; infrastructure and facilities improvement and shovel-ready sites.
What does this new day mean in real terms for both in-state and site-seeking
corporations? Plenty.
