Pittsburgh Takes Bio Route
Reeling from its own fiscal woes, as well as US Airways' July 2004 announcement that it would relinquish its hub-and-spoke operation centered at the city's airport, Pittsburgh is nonetheless forging ahead with new alliances and ventures. U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao was on hand in June 2004 for one of them: the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse. The incubator and training organization is receiving $2.4 million in work force training funds as part of the $17.2-million national Biotechnology Worker Training Initiative, part of President George W. Bush's "High Growth Job Training Initiative." But the area is also a consolidation hot spot. Witness the recent move by Del Monte Foods, or the more recent move by engineering, construction and environmental consulting firm GAI Consultants. While moving into a new 85,000-sq.-ft (7,897-sq.-m.) northern headquarters decreased the company's five-office real estate footprint in the area, it retained 220 jobs and promised to add 50 over the next three years. Promotional product company Leed's Inc. is adding 120,000 sq. ft (11,148 sq. m.) and 282 jobs to its headquarters in nearby New Kensington, while retaining the current payroll of 499 at its Westmoreland Business and Research Park location. ![]() |
