Rome, Georgia has been ranked by an independent study as the number one healthcare provider out of 193 small cities in the United States. With over 350 doctors and specialists to serve a regional population of over 500,000, the city has more physicians per capita than any other city in the state. Because of this, along with higher education, the biomedical industry has begun to flourish in Rome, offering more jobs to highly trained workers. Clinical trials in Rome are conducted at both the Harbin Clinic and the Regional Radiation Oncology Center at Rome, with additional regional and statewide clinical trials beginning in early 2004 through the Georgia Clinical Oncology Research Division of the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncologists. Harbin Clinic's 60+ trials include neurosciences, cardiovascular, pediatric, devices, infectious disease, orthopedics, rheumatology, pulmonary medicine, oncology and general medicine. The Regional Radiation Oncology Center's 110+ trials are conducted in conjunction with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group Foundation and include brain, gastrointestinal, head and neck, breast, lung, prostate and gynecology. Rome's institutes of higher learning have aided this growth and have responded by offering classes in these fields to their students, thereby insuring an even more skilled work force. In addition, several faculty members at Berry College, along with students, are researching areas of basic biology and chemistry on campus and at a variety of sites worldwide.
