Not that long ago, in November, a Site Selection Snapshot examined a new report from AARP+ summarizing the (usually unpaid) value of family caregiving and breaking down the numbers by state. In late March AARP provided an update that states family caregivers in the U.S. now provide more than $1 trillion worth of labor each year.
The report finds that “59 million Americans are caregivers of adults, providing care for older parents, spouses, neighbors and other loved ones, contributing 49.5 billion hours of care annually, work that would be valued at $1.01 trillion per year if paid in the marketplace, based on a value of $20.41 per hour.” By state, the estimated value of caregiving ranges from $14.12 per hour in Louisiana to $27.05 per hour in Washington, “reflecting regional differences in wages and the cost of care.”
“Thanks to AARP’s advocacy, Oklahoma became the first state in 2023 to pass a comprehensive state-wide caregiver tax credit to put money back in the pockets of family caregivers,” the organization’s press release stated. “Nebraska became the second state in 2024, and 12 states have considered state-wide caregiver tax credits legislation in the 2026 legislative session.”
