Spring 2018 saw the publication in Site Selection’s TrustBelt newsletter of “Life After Cabela’s: How Sidney Plans to Rebuilt Its Economy,” in which Ron Starner explored what leaders in the Nebraska town of just over 6,400 residents hoped to do after Bass Pro Shops acquired the outdoor retailer in a $5.5 billion merger. A follow-up story was published a year later.
A 2023 release from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development celebrated the city’s comeback after the merger. “Over the past five years, local leaders assisted in the creation of 15 new Sidney businesses through various forms of financial assistance, including the City’s LB840 program,” the release explained. “Nebraska’s Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act (LB840), adopted in 1991, allows communities — upon voter approval — to utilize a portion of local tax dollars for community development. Sidney’s LB840 program has generated 377 jobs since 2018.”

Today marks La Fête Nationale in France, otherwise known as Quatorze Juillet or Bastille Day. Associated with the 1789 storming of the state prison known as the Bastille, the date was named the national holiday in 1880.
Parisians were celebrating something different earlier this month as three new natural swimming sites at Bras Marie, Bercy and Grenelle officially opened to the public. The occasion marked the first time the public has been allowed to swim in the Seine in over a century, since swimming in the Seine was banned in 1923 due to pollution. About 1,000 swimmers a day will be able to access the sites until the end of August, said a release from the International Olympic Committee. It was just over one year ago that athletes swam through the Seine during the Olympic triathlon and marathon swimming competitions.
