The 2026 America’s Best Cities report and ranking of all 393 U.S. metro areas has been published, revealing the following top 10 based on perceptions of “livability, lovability and prosperity”:
- New York
- Los Angeles
- Chicago
- Miami
- San Francisco
- Seattle
- Las Vegas
- Dallas
- Houston
- Boston
On the outside looking in? Austin, San Diego and Atlanta in positions 11 through 13. “Las Vegas (#7) remains the most striking example of perception-driven competitiveness in the ranking: #248 in livability performance, #9 in livability perception, a gap built almost entirely on the strength of a global entertainment brand,” the report states.
“Americans are now considering 115 distinct cities as top-three choices for where to live, visit, or work — up from 99 just two years ago,” reports Resonance, the organization that publishes the report. “That widening consideration set collides with a shrinking talent pool: The Congressional Budget Office’s latest projection shows the smallest population gain the agency has ever published, and net international migration fell 54% in a single year.”
According to the report, 11 metros improved their national perception across all three pillars over the past three years: New Orleans, Honolulu, Kansas City, Santa Fe, San Jose, Greenville (South Carolina), Richmond, Cleveland, Salem (Massachusetts), Flagstaff and Ann Arbor.
