Days after the U.S. government cleared the way for aircraft designs like Joby Aviation’s to begin early operations across the U.S. this year as part of the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), Joby announced last week it had begun flight testing its first FAA-conforming air taxi aircraft for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA), which it called “a major step on the path to type certification. Initial testing by Joby pilots will pave the way for FAA pilots to visit Joby’s Marina, California, facility later this year to conduct the rigorous TIA testing required to validate the aircraft for commercial service.”
In 2025, Joby celebrated the completion of an expanded manufacturing facility in Marina and confirmed the start of propeller blade production in Ohio. “Additionally, Joby recently acquired a new 700,000 square-foot facility in Dayton, Ohio, to support its plans to double production to four aircraft per month in 2027,” the company stated. “Over time, Joby’s Dayton facilities are expected to be capable of supporting the delivery of up to 500 aircraft per year.”
Site Selection has been following the Joby story, including a Project Bulletin news brief about that recent acquisition in Dayton and a 2024 story about the firm’s liftoff in the region. Watch for more Ohio news — including on-site reporting from the nation’s No. 9 Tier 1 Top Metro Greater Cincinnati — in the May 2026 issue of Site Selection.

Singapore, Switzerland, Ireland and Australia grab the top 4 spots in the 32nd edition of the Index of Economic Freedom released by the Heritage Foundation last week. The U.S. ranks No. 22, just behind Mauritius and the Czech Republic and just ahead of the United Arab Emirates. But the preface to the Index notes that the country recorded the greatest improvement in the 2026 Index among advanced economies. Overall, Argentina’s economic freedom rating has increased by 3.2 points from last year, making it the best-performing country in the 2026 Index.

A recent winner of Design of the Year in the LIT awards for lighting design, “Arc ZERO: Eclipse” by Australia-based James Tapscott was unveiled in the Seoul region last year. A release from Tapscott’s firm Studio JT explains that The Eclipse represents an evolution of the original Arc ZERO work, installed in Japan in 2017, known as “Nimbus.” The piece is located at a rooftop garden in a new mixed-use development in Godeok, a rapidly growing area to the southeast of Seoul. Previous versions of Arc ZERO have been installed all around the world, with another permanent version in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, winning the 2023 CODA award for landscape art, says the studio.
