An Arctic Today story about Oulu, Finland, serving as the 2026 European Capital of Culture got us thinking about other European cities to have received this honor and the tourism that comes with it. Led by The Peel Group, today the £4.5 billion Wirral Waters and £5 billion Liverpool Waters projects on either side of the River Mersey are being developed under the umbrella of the Mersey Enterprise Zone. They feature the Liverpool region’s first application of district heating in commercial office buildings and a number of rising residential projects. As Taiwan-based TSMC’s massive investment in Greater Phoenix continues to unfold alongside other chip fab investments, so too does the looming threat of U.S. tariffs against Taiwanese products including semiconductors, though negotiations continue over potential increases in Taiwanese imports of energy from the U.S. and other topics even as some tariffs are due to take effect this week. “Taking lawmaker questions on Monday, Taiwan Deputy Finance Minister Frank Juan said he thought the chances the electronics industry would face tariffs was ‘relatively low’ given chipmaker TSMC’s new $100 billion investment in the United States announced earlier this month,” Reuters reported today. The €8.7 billion Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is an 18-kilometer underwater tunnel under the Baltic Sea between the island of Lolland in Denmark and the island of Fehmarn in Germany that will be the world’s largest underwater tunnel when complete. Tunnel elements are being produced at a purpose-built factory near Rødbyhavn on Lolland (pictured). Around 3,500 workers are at the Danish-side construction site, which is equivalent in size to 310 soccer fields. Around 200 workers are employed at the smaller German construction site.
A priority project of the EU Commission expected to open in 2029, the project will turn a 45-minute ferry crossing (excluding waiting and loading times) into a 7-minute crossing by train or 10-minute crossing by car. The total train trip time between Hamburg and Copenhagen will be shortened from 5 hours to 2.5 hours.
