In December, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, business leader Cynthia
Booth and the City’s Department of Community & Economic Development
announced plans for the creation of Project Hope, a 50,000-sq.-ft.
manufacturing facility that will create 100 full-time jobs and 36
full-time temporary construction jobs in Bond Hill at the vacant site
that once was the Cincinnati Gardens arena. Cincinnati City Council
voted unanimously to approve legislation allowing the project to move
forward. Emerge Manufacturing specializes in the production of personal
protection equipment for hospitals and healthcare facilities. Project
Hope will be a light manufacturing and office facility and cost an
estimated $10.2 million. Booth purchased the site from the Port earlier
in 2022, after the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and
JobsOhio backed the initial redevelopment of the land into a
development-ready site (see Site Selection, May 2019). The project will
receive a 15-year, net 67% Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) tax
exemption from the city.
In December, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners approved
a 50-year ground lease with MarineMax, Inc. for 9.5 acres of St.
Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) property where the company —
the world’s largest recreational boat and yacht retailer with over 125
locations worldwide — plans to construct a 132,000 SF state-of-the-art
manufacturing building, a parking garage for approximately 400 vehicles,
a travel lift well for hauling and launching yachts, and a waterside
docking facility for mooring yachts. According to a release from PIE,
the property was originally developed in the mid-’70s as a restaurant
and banquet facility by Specialty Restaurants. After a subsequent
subleasing business, The Turtle Club, closed, the county terminated the
lease and demolished the remaining structure. “We are very pleased to
bring this economic development opportunity forward with one of the few
undeveloped parcels of waterfront land in Pinellas County,” said Airport
Director Tom Jewsbury.

In this archive photo from 2017, a snowboarder carves a path through
untouched snow at Mt. Norquay Ski Resort in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
Norquay, where the base is around three feet and 59 of 60 runs are open,
was the original ski resort of the Canadian Rockies when it opened in
1926. It is referred to by locals as “Banff’s Backyard,” and on
Wednesday, January 11, will offer one of its carpool specials allowing
an entire vehicle’s occupants to ski for the price of one lift ticket.
