Tomorrow is Flag Day in the United States. This photograph made in March 1943 by Marjory Collins shows what Library of Congress records describe as an unnamed “Italian-American woman, with two sons in the Army, at the Annin Flag Company trimming threads from a finished flag for the government.” The image is part of the Farm Security Administration – Office of War Information photograph collection in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs division.
A sixth-generation family-owned business, Annin Flagmakers has been “making the U.S. Flag since 1847 and is the oldest and largest flag manufacturer in the United States,” having produced the flags for Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration and casket; the flag U.S. Marines flew at Iwo Jima; and flags that flew on the moon, among others. The company produces 4,000 products, all made in the USA by more than 500 employees. Headquartered in New Jersey, the company today has factories in South Boston, Virginia (its largest); Cobbs Creek, Virginia; and Coshocton, Ohio. Among its services, Annin offers this guide to flag etiquette.
