Morocco
India-based auto component manufacturer Motherson last week inaugurated
this new facility in the Tanger Med free zone development in Tangier. A
company release said new facility is a part of Motherson’s Modules and
Polymer Products division and will produce interior modules and
components like instrument panels and door panels for passenger vehicles
and light commercial vehicles. The facility replaces and doubles the
size of the company’s existing Tétouan site established in 2010. “The
improved proximity to the customer will help in saving transportation
costs and the expanded capacity will allow Motherson to provide more
employment and growth opportunities in Tangier,” the company stated.
“Morocco is a very strategic location for Motherson due its proximity to
Europe and the Middle East,” said V.C. Sehgal, the company chairman. “We
highly appreciate the continuous support of the Moroccan government and
Tanger Med teams to accelerate investment in Tangier. We are committed
to continuing our efforts to support the automotive sector in this
region to enable it to reach its full potential.”

Vancouver, B.C.-based fuel cell power company Ballard Power Systems in
late September announced a “local for local” strategy that calls for
deepening its global manufacturing footprint in Europe, the United
States and China to support global market demand growth through 2030.
“As part of this strategy, Ballard has entered into an investment
agreement with the Government of Anting in Shanghai’s Jiading District
to establish its new China headquarters, membrane electrode assembly
(MEA) manufacturing facility and R&D center at a site strategically
located at the Jiading Hydrogen Port, located in one of China’s leading
automotive industry clusters,” the company stated. In addition to
production capacity for 13 million MEAs (which will supply approximately
20,000 engines), the facility will also include space to assemble
approximately 600 engines annually to support the production and sale of
Ballard engines in the rail, marine, off-road and stationary markets in
China, as well as for certain export markets, Ballard said. The move
follows completion of the company’s MEA manufacturing expansion in
Canada last year. “This investment is expected to reduce MEA
manufacturing costs, align with China’s fuel cell value chain
localization policy, and position Ballard more strongly in the hydrogen
fuel cell demonstration cluster regions and for the post-subsidy
market,” Ballard said. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Anting,
Jiading District, which has quickly become a key hydrogen technology hub
in China,” said Alfred Wong, Ballard China CEO.
