PROJECT WATCH
Texas
Texas Governor Greg Abbott early this month announced that Denver-based
Leprino Foods will establish a new dairy products manufacturing facility
in Lubbock, Texas. According to the Conway Data Projects Database, the
most recent projects from Leprino, which produces mozzarella cheese and
other dairy products, were a $15 million investment in Roswell, New
Mexico, in 2018, and a $190 million, 150-job investment in its hometown
of Denver in 2016. “We are excited for the opportunities that the
Lubbock region provides, as well as bringing people, processes, and
technology together at a new, state-of-the-art facility,” said Mike
Durkin, president of Leprino Foods. “Furthermore, this new plant will
play a critical role in the dairy industry in Texas and will have a
substantial regional impact for local dairy farmers across the South
Plains to fulfill daily production needs.” “Leprino Foods arrival in
Lubbock reinforces West Texas’ reputation as being the country’s source
for fuel, food and fiber,” said Representative Dustin Burrows.
DHL Express in late September opened its new facility in Hamilton at the
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. The facility is four times
the size of the original building at the site. also located at Hamilton
International Airport, in order to meet significant increase in shipping
volumes. “The new technology and services we’ve implemented, as well as
the increased capacity for handling at the Hamilton Airport, will allow
us to meet the double-digit sales growth we’ve seen in shipping,” said
Darryl Wettlaufer, VP of Operations for DHL Express Canada. The airport
has 24-hour landing capability with dedicated Canada Border Services
Agency staff on site, which ultimately helped influence the company’s
decision to expand in Hamilton. Every month, 60% of DHL’s total Canadian
shipments are cleared at Hamilton International Airport. Other DHL
Express gateways in Canada are located in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton,
Winnipeg, Montreal and Mirabel.
The facility is part of more than $360 million DHL Express is investing
in the Americas region between 2020 and 2022, including an expanded hub
in Miami; hub expansions in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey; and
gateway expansions in Capinas, Brazil, and Lima, Peru. In terms of new
jobs, in the U.S. alone, more than 2,600 new jobs are expected to be
filled throughout 2021, in addition to the 3,000 that were created in
2020. These new jobs include 1,100 new positions at the DHL Americas Hub
at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG), and nearly 200 at the
expanded hub in Miami.

The new sculpture “Rocket” by Hubert Phipps was recently selected for an
Art in Public Places initiative at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus
(BRiC), a historic technology and architectural landmark location where
the first IBM personal computer was invented. The public art program is
part of a cultural partnership between the Boca Raton Museum of Art and
commercial real estate owner, operator and developer CP Group. The
sculpture is valued at $1.5 million, stands 30 feet tall, weighs 9.8
tons, and took more than 2,200 sq. ft. of stainless steel to construct.
The sculpture was fabricated in Hangzhou, China. Click here
to read more about Phipps’ compelling personal history and heritage in
aviation and his other work.
A news release states that the sculpture “towers alongside a waterfront
panorama of iconic architecture designed by Marcel Breuer in the 1960s,”
noting that the buildings and sculpture complement one another in the
Brutalist style. “The sculpture by Hubert Phipps was conceived as that
intersection between art and science, and celebrates the heroics of
modern engineering, as also seen in Marcel Breuer’s historic building
designs for IBM’s North American Research and Development Headquarters,”
said Irvin Lippman, the executive director of the Boca Raton Museum of
Art. BRiC today is a 1.7 million-sq.-ft. office park that supporters
call a magnet for “forward thinkers in technology and life sciences.”
The campus is currently home to 18 national headquarters and 19 regional
offices including sites from Kroger, Modernizing Medicine, Canon and
Boca Regional Hospital.
