Site Selection Names Winners of Inaugural Sustainability Rankings, Highlights Technology Centers

Atlanta, July 1, 2010: In the inaugural Sustainability Rankings appearing in Site Selection’s first annual Green Guide, California has topped the list of sustainable states by leading in half of the eight criteria comprising the ranking system index.

California led the rankings, featured in Site Selection’s July issue, by placing high in all categories and first in four criteria: available state and local green incentives; energy efficiency; total LEED-certified projects; and combined EPA brownfields funding and leveraged funding since that agency’s program began in 1995.

Joel Ayala, director of the newly formed Governor’s Office of Economic Development in California, estimates that some 60 percent of new prospects are within clean and green business sectors. “They are appreciative of the consumer market as well as the research talent,” he says. “They set up headquarters around our universities, and set up models around innovation. And they are looking to do more manufacturing here.”

The San Francisco; Portland, Ore.; and Denver metro areas topped the list of most sustainable U.S. metros. And Canada, Brazil, China, Germany and Norway topped the list of most sustainable nations outside the U.S.

“Unique among various green rankings, Site Selection’s sustainability index awards points to those areas showing significant corporate facility investment in green-tech industry sectors, according to the Conway Data New Plant Database,” says Adam Bruns, managing editor. “We also award points for factors that invite such investment, such as government policies that encourage sustainable development, making green communities as economically viable as they are eminently livable.” The entire rankings and criteria are listed below and posted online at www.siteselection.com.

Site Selection’s Green Guide features a full suite of articles relevant to corporate real estate and economic development with sustainability in mind: a green project scrapbook; a case study of Tesla and Toyota’s partnership in reopening the just-closed NUMMI plant in Fremont, Calif.; an exclusive interview with DuPont’s Corporate Sustainability Officer Linda J. Fisher; and a primer on Green Incentives.

The July issue’s cover story “Critical Components” examines how technology centers, often linked with research universities, are critical drivers of local and regional economic prosperity, and fast-track innovation from idea to job-creation. The section also includes the full 2010 directory of the Association of University Research Parks.
